The Last Time
May. 24th, 2012 02:51 pmFirst Eurovision semi-final on Tuesday night. I fell in love with Ivi Adamou from Cyprus. Her song is called 'La La Love' and, as I posted on Facebook and Twitter, "I la la love her". The Danish lady was lovely too, got to love a pretty girl in a ceremonial guards uniform, and they both sang very strong songs. Delighted that they both went through, and pleasantly surprised as my favourites normally get left by the wayside in the semis!
Surprised to see Belgium's beautifully sung, very strong power ballad and San Marino's quirky topical song about online social networks didn't make it.
What I noticed about Jedward's entry, fountain aside, was that it was very like the classic cheese that regularly populated Eurovision in the seventies and eighties. I can see them, and the equally classic-cheesy Greek effort, picking up some votes from veteran ESC fans - my friend Ann, with whom I watch the Contest every year, included!
All the talk at the office yesterday morning was about the Russian babushkas. Melissa predicted they'd win...
Mid-morning yesterday Maria came up to my desk and asked if she could have a chat - "nothing serious," she added. We met Elaine en route and she joined us to go in search of a free meeting room. After asking around, we finally found one.
The meeting was to ask if I was willing to move over to work with Elaine and Demelza, editing a new system to get it ready for going operational next year. My contract will still be up on New Year's Eve, but, as Elaine and Maria pointed out, it's going to give me the chance to work plenty of additional time and build up a flex day or two to allow me to go for job interviews. Naturally I accepted.
They explained that it will mean Elaine will now be my line manager. Maria said 'thank you' to me for my work since she arrived in January and said it had been a pleasure being my line manager; I thanked her for her support.
It's going to mean moving desks, hopefully to sit with Elaine and Demelza, as long as the PC I will be working on can be moved to the desk opposite them. Demelza's delighted I'll be working with her again - "You'd better be excited!" she said, and added "We can play Hum The Tune on Fridays again." Since we won't be sitting within earshot of Bev (who put a stop to us playing Hum The Tune as it drove her nuts) we might get away with it, as long as Elaine has higher tolerance levels...
My Olympic tickets arrived yesterday afternoon. Bitter-sweet sensation.
Last maths exam this morning. A couple of the questions were gruellers, but I did attempt everything this time, and I seemed to muddle through OK. As we walked out afterwards, Lindsay said "Is it just me, or was there an awful lot of probability in this one?" I confirmed that the paper had indeed been probability-heavy. I'm still semi-confident of getting an A, but think I may have to settle for a B.
