Painter, Homer, Weather, Rainbow
Apr. 18th, 2012 06:46 pmThis morning, after the early rain had died down and the sun was trying to break through, Bev announced "It's going to be a Bungle, George and Zippy day."
Mel and I understood the cultural reference straight away, and I thought Bev was saying she thought that the atmosphere in the office today was going to be akin to an episode of Rainbow, but poor Maria is too old to have been a Rainbow fan so she had to have it explained to her. Bev told her about Zippy with the zipper mouth, and Maria confessed she had heard of him, then I filled her in on the others. "Bungle was a giant teddy bear and George was a pink hippo."
"And you openly admit that you watch this?" Tracy asked me incredulously.
"I watched it in the 1970s," I replied with a smile.
"Never heard of it." Tracy is in the right age group to have watched Rainbow as a kid but obviously had a deprived childhood.
Bev found a photo of the trio on the net. Maria went over to look, and declared that she could do with a hug from Bungle. Then Bev, Mel and I reminisced about Rod, Jane and Freddy.
Perhaps surprisingly, it turned out Bev hadn't meant that the office would be like an episode of the show; she just meant that, weather-wise, we could expect to get a rainbow.
I do know the real words of the theme tune now, but the title of this entry is how I thought the song went when I was little. After all, memories are what it's all about.
