Eighth Day
Feb. 27th, 2012 06:19 pmMost of our office got hit by a computer server failure this morning. We had to do odd bits of paperwork, read newspapers and magazines, play Solitaire, Hearts or Minesweeper (they were still functioning) or talk for the first couple of hours.
The dentist I saw today pointed out that the sticking-up bit was actual tooth, not filling, but when she examined it she couldn't dispute that it needed filing down. So she ground my tooth down to uniform size and gave it a polish, and neither she nor the receptionist mentioned charging me. Sorted.
Back at the office there was still nothing doing, though the internet was now active, enabling us to catch up on the news and weather. There was a power cut in the canteen, meaning those of us who hadn't brought grub had to pop out to a little general store half a mile down the road or, like me, wander over to the Shitpool and use the vending machine there. With my having given up chocolate for Lent, that meant crisps or crisps. Still, their computers were down too, so lots of interviewers including the lovely Julieann were sitting in the breakout area. It would have been rude not to stop for a wee chat with her.
It wasn't long before we were able to start work, but in the afternoon one of the systems failed again. That wasn't enough to bring us to a standstill, but meant Mel and I had to leave our PCs turned on and leave Maria, who works much later than us, to switch them off...
