To London for Fisher v Erith Town. Decided to save a few bob by going by National Express, but the coach was absolutely full, I had to sit with my legs in an awkward position to hold on to my carrier bag and keep clear of my neighbour, and within minutes of setting off I made up my mind to go by train next week - the additional comfort's well worth the little extra.

On the way from Victoria coach station to the bus stop, I had to give the slip to an earnest young duo who wanted me to hang around with them for five minutes to allow them to save my soul. At the ground, I met the father of Nick Davis, an ex-Fish now with Erith Town, and as we watched the second half of Southampton v Blackpool on the big screen we had a chinwag and he waxed lyrical about the heady days of the Conference South - before it all came crashing down. After Mr Davis had gone to meet the players, Dan came over to join Mark and me; we learned from him that the Fish have a new keeper, Joe Hagan, on loan from Tonbridge Angels. That was good news as it's allowing Bill Hensman to get some physiotherapy on his leg and gives us a keeper who can kick properly.

Erith took an early lead with a curler from outside the box. Nothing much happened all game, both teams missing the occasional chance, until in time added on Jamie Humphris sent in a speculative long-range shot that deflected in off the post to give us a point. Cue delirious celebrations in the stands.

It was the club Christmas party in Bermondsey after, but I had a coach to catch and anyway I'm having to watch my pennies at this time of year - not only is it the festive season but my car insurance is due - so I wended my way back.

I know I'm supposed to be snubbing X Factor this year but I've a soft spot for young Amelia from what I've heard about her, I feel sorry for her with some of the stick she's been getting, and I am very fond of her beautiful mentor, so just after arriving home I sneaked a look at the final - just in time to see the two lovely young ladies duetting on a killer rendition of River Deep Mountain High. Enough for me to bung her a vote.

Got to go watch the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show on Five.
