Went over to the Isle of Wight to catch up with Daniel. After a minor mix-up on the phone, he fortunately pulled up in the part of Ryde Esplanade where I was pottering around, and we drove off to Binstead to take a look at the poetry box there.

The perspex display case by the box contained the same poems that it had in August - and on my visit before that in April. I asked Daniel if he could give the keyholder a prod and let them know I'd deposited a poem in the box some weeks ago. He said that he wasn't in touch with her, but that on the bright side he had a key to the display case.

We moseyed on to Quarr Abbey for a slice of chocolate mint cake and a bottle of rose lemonade, and Daniel told me about his current project, leading schoolkids in building go-karts. As part of the activity he and his pal Bill will act a story in which Daniel plays a professor and the kids have to build go-karts to help him catch the villain Basil Bomeswish (Bill).

We walked on to Fishbourne only to find the Fishbourne Inn closed for redevelopment. So we strolled back to the car and headed for Newport, where Daniel had to collect some tools he needs for his go-karting project. When he'd finished in the hardware shop we went on to an internet cafe, where we printed a copy of my latest poem and watched a video on Youtube of Daniel's raft ride along the river Douro being featured on Spanish TV news.

On to East Cowes to have a cup of tea and toast at Daniel's, then we drove back to Binstead to add my poem to the display board. Job done, Daniel dropped me in the centre of Ryde where we said our goodbyes. I went for chicken and chips at a take-away then to the Crown Hotel to watch Liverpool v Norwich before getting the hovercraft back.

At the Hard the busker was singing Don't Look Back In Anger and four inebriated men were joining in with gusto. In the queue I met a bloke called Ryan who'd known me at school and his mate, another Ryan. They'd been to Portsmouth v Doncaster and had clearly had a few after. We talked old friends, football and (to satisfy Ryan #2's curiosity) the areas of history I studied at uni till the boat came.
