The Boys Are Back In Town
Aug. 13th, 2011 09:54 pmAh, first day of the season, gloriously sunny weather and the feeling that this might be the season for your team, especially at Fisher where we've made several new signings and the whole buzz around the club is upbeat and optimistic about a title challenge...there's nowt like it.
Until 4.50 pm, anyway.
No trains to East Dulwich today thanks to engineering works, so had to get the bus from Waterloo. Good to see that south London appeared to be carrying on as normal, it could have been any London Saturday at the height of summer. That's the way.
Hadn't long bought my programme when a club official appeared and told Ben the progs would all have to be recalled, dismantled and put back together - every one had been stitched with a sheet missing, meaning they were lacking the fixture list, the preview of next week's FA Cup tie at Chichester and the second half of the 'London football chat' article. I handed mine back.
A leisurely Bulmers in the bar - sadly they only stock normal, no No 17. Soon after I'd collected my complete prog and returned to the bar's comfy sofa, I heard a bloke near me say he couldn't find the fixture list in his programme. One of his mates and I both realised he'd got a snide one and advised him to potter down to the turnstile and swap it.
Tim was in the directors' area with his nipper. I walked up the stairs and said "Hello Timbo" - he was gobsmacked to see me. "Welcome back to the wacky world of the Fish."
Fisher created a few chances - Danny Hunt missed a couple, Peter Afolayan shot wide from close range, and Kenny Jarrett-Elliott kept going forward but was constantly shackled by the Erith & Belvedere defence. In truth Erith were on top most of the match. They scored either side of the break, and their second seemed to knock the stuffing out of Fisher although Steve O'Donnell did have a go near the end - he shot wildly wide.
Yes, it's a marathon not a sprint, but there's nothing like an opening day defeat for puncturing pre-season optimism.
In the clubhouse after, more gloom - the Shire lost 4-2 at Berwick.
Had to hang around for a wee while to collect my season ticket
Bumped into Barry and Mark from Havant, on their way home from the Hawks' game at Boreham Wood, at Waterloo Burger King. They'd won 1-0 and said it had been a cracking game, so they were in high spirits. We started to have a quick chat, then Mark pointed out a space at one of the counters and advised me to nip in.
Getting off the ferry with me at Gosport were a group of Geordies discussing their game with Arsenal. I asked how they'd got on; one of them said it had been a 0-0 draw and told me all about an altercation Joey Barton had had with an Arsenal player, in which the Gunner seemed to have been the principal offender. I said I'd watch out for it on Match of the Day.
