My birthday party last night. Rob arrived from London about an hour early, so he and I had a chat with my parents occasionally joining us in between putting up the banners and balloons. Lots of my friends and extended family made it, as did most of the Hawk girls. Got oodles of nice books and Amazon vouchers, plus a few very welcome real ales. I spent the evening circulating around everyone and being bought bottle after bottle of Beck's (I had three on the go simultaneously at one point) - didn't have to shell out all night. Ann, though six months pregnant, came, which was fantastic; she, Rob, Aussie and Carol all had a jolly good chat about the Eurovision. They were mortified that I've got to miss the Contest this year for the first time since I first became a fan in 1996, thanks to my cousin Gayle's birthday party - Carol urged me to ask Gayle to put a telly in the room... Rob agreed to text me the voting number on the night.

Nick and his wife, another Ann, knowing I'm a cricket fan, got me a T-shirt they'd had signed by Curtly Ambrose and his reggae band while on holiday in Antigua. The Hawk girls gave me a framed photo of themselves and an inscribed tankard, which they insisted I christen on the night. So I poured my current Beck's into the tankard and gave a toast to the girls : "Here's to you and here's to me, best of friends we'll always be, Norwich 0 Hawks Ladies 3" - cue riotous cheer from the girls.

At the start of the evening Ian the DJ asked me what sort of music I wanted so I went for 80s chart hits - much to my father's chagrin, though he managed to get some oldies played later while we also had some modern stuff in for the Hawk girls. He didn't manage to get them on the dance floor despite several prompts, so I asked him to stick on their anthem Hotel Room Service but even that only had them jigging and singing in their seats. It was only when, on hearing I was a Pogues fan, Ian played The Irish Rover, Sally Maclennane and Wild Rover that Kerrie and Trudi hit the floor and showed the others some Irish style dancing. I'd also asked Ian to play my favourite song Sit Down at some point during the night, but he interpreted that as a karaoke request so I ended up having to sing it. Nobody else tickled their tonsils, not even Hawks Ladies karaoke queen Charley - for all Ian's and my efforts to get her to give us a tune.

Not too hung over this morning.
