Jan. 9th, 2011 09:14 pmDown to Blackfield & Langley for the Hawk girls' FA Women's Cup Second Round match with Enfield Town Ladies. There were a couple of guys in the stand supporting Enfield, and I had Val and Ian for company. About a quarter of an hour into the game, some friends of Stacie's turned up to cheer us on, but by then we'd already let one in thanks to our defence leaving their striker free in front of an open goal. Lauren equalised in the 31st minute, so at half time Stacie's pals were under the impression we were 1-0 up when actually we were drawing!
Two young lads who'd been playing football on the grass in a corner began watching the game and came up to the stand near the end of the second half. They were well impressed with Lauren! Both sides surged forward relentlessly over the closing ten minutes, but the defences held firm, and in the 94th minute an Enfield girl hit the post. It was extra time.
Lauren drilled a shot just wide late in the first period; then in the 111th minute Sadie parried an Enfield effort only for the ball to soar free for their striker, who'd threatened all afternoon, to head home and break our hearts. We did get a corner in the final minute, and our whole team including Sadie packed the Enfield penalty area, but Sam's shot went wide and our dreams of another cup run went crashing.
Most of the girls seemed OK in the clubhouse after but Lauren was well pissed off with her performance. Nicky told her she'd played well but she wouldn't have it. Kim, who lives in Gosport, gave me a lift as far as the Brockhurst roundabout and I walked home from there - that'll have worked off the calories I've just gained from the takeaway fried chicken and chips purchased en route.
Gotta go hit the hay - up at 4.30 again tomorrow :(
