Took the bus over to Locks Heath for the Hawks Ladies' crunch match with Chesham. The bus doesn't actually go along the stretch of Warsash Road where the ground is : you have to get off at the Holiday Inn roundabout and walk along for just under a mile. Still, it's all good exercise, and made the pint of Upham Ale go down very nicely.

Val and Ian stood next to me. At kick-off Val said "I think Chesham could be in for a shock today."

"I hope so," I replied, and we recalled how Chesham totally ragged their win against us at their place, and how much we'd both felt for Lizzie when she missed that penalty.

The game was exciting end-to-end stuff, a magnificent advert for women's football. On 25 minutes Chesham took the lead when Sadie appeared to have a chip shot well covered but fumbled the ball and let in a Chesham player to loop into an open goal. From then I was convinced it was going to be Halloween horror for the Hawk girls, until just before half-time the Chesham goalie wrapped her arms round Charley's legs to bring her down in the area, and this time, fortified by shouts of 'No pressure, Lizzie, do it for me' from Val and her friend, Liz made no mistake from the spot.

Val and Ian watched the second half from the other side, so I had Vicky and a group of her friends for company. One nice young lady had a wicked sense of humour and she and I had some top banter together. Chesham went in front again on 54 minutes. Hawks piled on the pressure but the Chesham defence kept us at bay; with eleven minutes to go, Vicky's friends and I were observing gloomily that if we lost Hawks would be out of the promotion race, and Vicky replied "Kaylee's going to score in a minute."

Next moment, Hawks got a corner which Charley floated in...and Kaylee headed into the net. When we'd finished whooping with delight, the girl I liked reminded Vicky of her prescient prediction, and I asked Vicky what the lotto numbers were going to be this Wednesday...

Our defenders' solid rearguard action was enough to thwart Chesham's pursuit of a winner. Our sub Jess shot wide with the last kick of the game; never mind, at last we'd stopped Chesham getting a win, and we'd kept the flickering flame of our promotion hopes alive. After shouting "Well played, girls" and giving them a quick clap, I turned to begin the trek to the bus stop, the girl and I exchanging "Nice meeting you"s.

As I plodded along Warsash Road, a passing car beeped. I looked up - the girl was waving out of the window.
