Oct. 7th, 2010 06:38 pmKnocked off early yesterday to travel to London to see the film Albino United at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. In Tanzania, albinos are often social outcasts, and outside the more tolerant capital Dar es Salaam they live in danger of being hunted down and killed so their body parts can be sold for witchcraft. In an effort to show Tanzanians that albinos are human too and can be achievers, an ex-national team footballer formed an albino football team who were accepted into the Tanzanian Third Division. Film-makers from More4 followed them through their first season. The film was fascinating. It was moving and inspiring to see the players going around meeting people before their games, spreading goodwill, and winning hearts and minds through their efforts on the football field. Afterwards one of the directors, Marc Hoeferlin, did a Q&A with the audience - one lady asked if he'd learned Swahili (no, he'd relied on a local translator) then revealed that she was learning it herself.
Home just after midnight. Had arranged to make a late start today. Naturally the car park was packed by then, but I found a space between two other cars...and misjudged my position and gave one of the neighbouring cars a bump, leaving it with a wee dent just above the right hand rear wheel. Left a note under the windscreen wiper with my contact details.
From there I had to try and put the incident to the back of my mind, go to my course and concentrate on survey sampling for the rest of the day.
I'm sitting by my mobile waiting for a call - had a false alarm about an hour ago when
girlafraid1973 texted wanting a text chat.
Congrats to Rebecca Adlington for putting one bright spot on the day.
