Jul. 18th, 2010 08:21 pmBack with the girls again, for their first pre-season friendly away to Reading FC Women, and I managed to blag a lift with Dick. When Chris dropped Chloe off at Westleigh Park for the meetup, I asked "How was your summer?" and he looked perplexed and asked "Is it over?" I saw his point, but we football folk are used to using 'summer' to mean the summer break between seasons.
News from Trev and Dick that our league will be two teams short this season, as both WFC Fulham and Winscombe Ladies have disbanded, and Reading Town had turned down the offer of a reprieve from relegation (not surprising after they spent last season getting humped by rugby scores every week). It was sad to think of Fulham, undisputed queens of the English women's game just eight years ago, being no longer with us, and I'm a little sorry not to be going to Winscombe again, the friendly club with the wine bottles of Katy Rose cider.
We had five first-choice players missing on holiday, plus two of last year's squad have left for other teams, so we were down to the bare bones. We had just two subs: a 16-year-old girl from the college who'd never played senior football, and Yzzy the sub goalkeeper - though we were lucky to have her there as Sadie limped off injured 17 minutes in.
We lost 4-2, no disgrace with a denuded squad against a team two divisions higher, though our girls appeared to be half asleep for the first ten minutes (they let in the first goal after two). But our goals were crackers, Laura with a fine header from a corner and one of Lizzie's legendary rockets from 25 yards. The general mood among the girls and staff was fairly upbeat after.
