Jun. 9th, 2010 06:27 pmWe drew the office World Cup sweepstake today, even several ladies who admitted to having no interest in football joining in to make up the 32. I got Spain, drawing a fair bit of envy from everyone who knew they're the favourites. Matt, who organised it, did his best to buck up anyone who'd picked an outsider, saying "They've got a chance, you never know" - though he was momentarily confused by both Korea DPR and Korea Republic being in the competition.
Della drew Honduras and threw herself into the role of fan with gusto. Calling on my help, she looked up their flag on the Net; at first she complained that it was dull, but I pointed out "It's pretty, it's got five stars on." Despite initial grumbles that she wished the flag had some red and green on (I said she should have had Portugal) she is now firmly an honorary Honduran. She looked up the Wiki entry about their football team and was impressed with them beating the USA in qualifying, and their sticking thirteen past Nicaragua in the 1930s. I asked if she'd read about their 1970 World Cup qualifier with El Salvador that led to an actual war, but she hadn't got to that yet. Later she printed out a paper copy of the Honduran flag and attached it to a pen to make a makeshift flag. With my having Spain I suggested to her that we watch Spain v Honduras together in the TV lounge, but that dream went for a burton with one look at the wallchart - it's a 7.30 pm kick-off.
