Dec. 23rd, 2009 02:40 pmWent to see Slade at Brune Park School last night. There was a bar set up in the canteen - serving Magners and London Pride :) A tape of cheesy pop songs, some Christmassy, played over the tannoy before the start of the show and during the interval; it included an interesting mash-together of Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day and the Wombles' Wombling Merry Christmas. The support, a local group of young lads called Luke Ferre and the Jamborees, weren't bad.
Slade's set was one massive party. They played all their well known hits, and lead singer Mal McNulty has Noddy's authentic sound down to a T - you really don't notice that it's someone else's voice. Dave Hill, being one of the originals, did most of the between-songs patter. The fair-sized crowd, including a huge mixed-sex party of forty-somethings in 70s costume, were stood disparately around the hall till, after the openers Far Far Away and Get Down And Get With It, Mal waved us all to gather down at the front. When we'd assembled there, he announced "This is our first No. 1, everybody clap and stamp please" and launched into Coz I Luv You. After two songs of the encore, naturally Don put on a chimney-style Christmas hat and the rest of the band all nipped into the wings to don their Santa hats, to close the show with Merry Christmas Everybody. Top gig, though my cold did give me breathing difficulty some of the time.
The few of our section working today - minus Pam who phoned to say her driveway and pavement were completely frozen - knocked off for the Christmas break at lunch time. Was on my way out when Dave said he'd heard the buses were suspended. Jane found an old bus timetable with contact phone numbers on; First Hampshire played a recorded message, but I did, after being held in a queue, get to speak to someone at National Traveline South West who said the single bus route that runs past our office was suspended. I told Jane that I'd hang on until 2.30 and ask Paula if she could drop me in Fareham, but Mike, who was just leaving, said he was going to Gosport and offered me a lift.
