Oct. 24th, 2009 11:04 pmDriving lesson this morning. First hour nearly painless, apart from running into the kerb again on the reverse round a corner thanks to my steering too much to the right when trying to straighten up. The second half was the mock test. Alas, I committed two fail offences. Going for a right turn from just in front of a blind bend, I thought a suddenly appearing oncoming car would wait and let me complete the move, so was about to carry on with the turn when Peter hit the emergency stop control on me. Then, driving along past the boating lake towards the south relief road, I was in the lane for turning right at the roundabout instead of the one for going straight on, and didn't change lanes until told to by Peter. On the bright side I had only nine minor faults, and no more than two in any category, so Peter said at the end I can think about booking my real test soon, though we're going to do one more mock one next week first.
Went to see Fareham Town at Totton & Eling in the afternoon. Their ground also had a railway line running nearby, enabling Paul to do his train sweepstake again. I picked 23, in a popular range, but this line was a lot less busy and there were only 12. The match ended goalless, but wasn't uneventful from our point of view. We had plenty of top banter with the Totton goalie. Among our support were a nice couple, 'Good' (I think that's what they called him) and Sarah (a Darlington fan from Enfield), both of whom were partially sighted and accompanied by their guide dogs. One of the dogs, Libby, barked a lot, earning the odd chant of 'Libby, give us a bark' and, in the clubhouse after, being awarded the title of 'our loudest supporter'. Near the end of the game Dan Hayes was facing an open goal from point blank range...but blazed over the bar.
One bit of good cheer for me in the clubhouse : LISBURN DISTILLERY ACTUALLY WON, FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW!! After weeks dangling off the bottom of the table with one point, the Whites now have 7, and as last week's win was over Institute and they only drew today we've cut the gap to just four points. A miracle might happen yet... My punching the air and exclaiming 'yes' naturally drew Good to ask what I was celebrating, then we had a good chat about Irish football.
Travelled back on the train with Good and Sarah. It turns out Good worked where I now do, in the very same job no less, over 25 years ago, so we compared notes on how the job and the office have changed in all that time.
Arrived home halfway through Strictly. Missed Jade's samba, but was gratified to see her in third on the leaderboard after the judges' points, and I was home in plenty of time to vote, which was what mattered. As, one by one, the couples coming back next week were read out, with Jade and Ian not among them, I was convinced Bruce was teasing us by leaving them to the end since the idea of them being in the dance-off was clearly ridiculous...until the last couple was read out as Ricky and Natalie. My heart leapt to my mouth. I breathed a tentative sigh of relief when Jade and Ian delivered a flawless performance in the dance-off, and tottered on the edge of my seat praying the judges would do the right thing and not put Jo through out of sympathy. They did, thank goodness, but I'm still staggered at how Jade's public vote has simply collapsed.
