Aug. 18th, 2009 07:18 pmTo Westleigh Park last night for Hawks v Bath City. On the walk out of the station, an elderly Bath fan spotted my Hawks shirt and followed me to the ground; we talked about non league football and he spoke of his passion for Arsenal. Arriving at the clubhouse he said "Can I buy you a pint?" My request for a mixed fruit Kopparberg left him a bit gobsmacked but he ordered one easily enough :)
The ground was packed, thanks to hordes of Pompey fans taking advantage of the Blues season ticket, so I was even more desperate than usual for us to play well and keep them keen. Hawks took the lead early on with a brilliant goal from Manny Williams, but sloppy defending left us trailing 2-1 by the hour mark. As the game drew to a close, around me the oldies in the stand were doing their usual cynical mutters and moans while I slumped in my seat thoroughly fed up...till, in the final minute, Manny Williams danced his way round the Bath defence and lobbed the ball over the bath keeper for an equaliser.
The entire Hawk support went bananas. I remembered what Sarah Kane said, which I'd seen again last week quoted in my copy of Graham Saunders' new book on her, about the euphoria of seeing your team score a last-minute equaliser when you've been resigned to defeat : "I've never left a football match early, because you never know when a miracle might occur."
On my way out of the ground Matt asked how I was getting home.
"Train."
As he was going to Gosport, he gave me a lift. Top banana.
Had to call on Chris for help today on several of the paperwork cases, and while she was away from her desk for half an hour or so I went to Melissa and Pam to help me out. "He's been keeping me on my toes," Christine observed to Sue at the end of the day; when Pam pointed out I'd also gone to her and Melissa, Sue quipped to me "You've been spreading it about"...
