Aug. 11th, 2009 10:20 pmWent down to see the Gosport Borough v Portsmouth XI friendly this evening, since I thought it might be a good game.
At half time, my heart skipped a beat when I saw Miss Sapphire queuing at the tea bar. Miss Sapphire is a young lady I've been very fond of for quite some while - admittedly my affection's been dormant most of that time as we hardly ever meet, but it's never gone away, and we have been in touch quite a bit lately, especially since I sent her her Drop of Åland special delivery and, because she's staying away from home at the moment, she hasn't had a chance to collect it, and we're both waiting to see whether it gets returned to me or is still sitting in her local sorting office.
She was talking on her mobile, so I stood just a little bit away from her, moving with the queue to keep up with her, all the while wondering what kind of figure I was cutting in my casual clothes and hoping to heaven I didn't have any burger relish on my chops. After what seemed an eternity she finished her conversation and I went up to her to say hello.
Miss Sapphire was perfectly friendly - we've always got on well - and we had rather a nice chat. When I updated her on my promotion at work and said I'd be looking for a place of my own after Christmas, she mentioned that she owns her own house. As she lives thirty miles from my workplace, I found myself thinking "Hmm, I guess that wouldn't be too bad a commute". Whoa cowboy.
We finished by promising to keep each other updated about her package (she knows it's a gift from my holiday, but doesn't know what it is yet) and agreeing we'd meet up while she's staying locally.
It was a pleasant enough conversation for me to stay optimistic, but I had Miss Sapphire on my mind all through the second half, though Aussie lightened my mood by coming over to say hello and talking to me for a little while till his son decided he wanted to watch from the far end. Near the end, I made my way to the clubhouse in the hope of catching the Bromley v Havant & Waterlooville result. No such luck - instead of Sky Sports News they were showing Bury v West Brom - but instead of going back outside for the last ten minutes I bought a much-needed Magners and watched through the window, thinking "Please let it go right for me this time".
Again, no such luck. When I got home I logged on to Facebook and posted "is hopeful" as my status, then took a look at Miss Sapphire's page. Her second most recent newsfeed is "went from 'single' to 'in a relationship'". I immediately changed my status to "Hopeful? Scratch that - hopes just blasted out of the sky with a twelve-bore".
Even the news that Hawks won 2-0 at Bromley only raised a flicker of a smile.
