Aug. 9th, 2009 07:21 pmDown to Three Bridges for the Hawk girls' friendly with Crawley Wasps. Over half an hour's wait at Barnham - cue for lunch at the station's charming Interchange Cafe.
Arrived an hour before kick off and met Becky, Sarah, Rob and Christine standing at pitchside. "They lost yesterday, then," said Rob; as the Hawks drew yesterday (and East Stirlingshire didn't have a game), I replied "No, drew." He'd heard that Hawks were losing 1-0 at halftime so had assumed that was the final score. Rob said he was surprised I didn't go to more of the men's away games; I explained that with ticket prices and train fares, to follow the male Hawks on the road regularly I'd have to knock the girls on the head. "None of us wants you to do that," Becky smiled. I needed a drink now; "There's a nice bar there, go get yourself a Magners," advised Becky.
Trev was in the bar. I mentioned that the Sports Mail had agreed with the initial view of the rest of the spectators and myself on Tuesday, and printed that Chloe had scored our goal; Trev said "that's because you were right". It turned out his absolute insistence on the night that Telé had been the scorer had been based on nothing stronger than "somebody told me it was Telé that scored". At that point Chloe's dad arrived and shared with us the story of how he'd had to email Rich, the webmaster, to insist Chloe get the credit she deserved on the results page. Accompanying him was the mother of our new second-choice keeper Yzzy.
Crawley Wasps are a progressive club who've always performed well on and off the pitch for several seasons now, and last year, after several near misses, they finally won promotion to the level we've just left. I was expecting a good close game, but from the moment that Charlie gave us the lead in the first minute with a lob over the keeper from 25 yards out it was always going to be a comfortable Hawk win. It was, though, a surprise that we won 8-1. When they scored their consolation goal with only minutes remaining, the people around us supporting Wasps made jokes like "That's the equaliser" and "As we're a division lower our goals count octuple, didn't they tell you?" Meanwhile, walking back round to the stand from the bar for the start of the second half I passed three drunk guys, soaking up the sun wearing only shorts, appreciating the novelty of the women's game - one of them was cheering for Hawks as, although he now lives in Three Bridges, he's a Pompey fan originally from Denmead.
Back in the clubhouse after, everyone was pleased with the performance; Trev observed "That was a team, as opposed to a collection of individuals who are better than everyone else in the division." A bit of a chat with some of the girls, while Rob's emotional reactions to his earpiece radio told everyone how the Charity Shield was going, then back to the station...
