Dragged my carcass from bed at 4.30 to sort myself breakfast then get the red-eye bus just after 6, to be in the office at 7 am. This wasn't just because Elaine had told me many of the staff favour starting work at the crack of dawn, but also to allow me to leave at 3.15 and get home to see a bit more of the World Twenty20 Cup. Hazel, one of the Miscellaneous Coders, was also on that bus, and we were joined on the second bus by someone who works on the other side.

Simon was actually there when I arrived at my desk on the dot of seven. He went over a few of my cases from yesterday that the computer had flagged as mistakes, said that I'd actually got a couple of them right and it was the training software that was out of date, and showed me where I'd slipped up on the others. The next batch introduced a new element - different codes depending on how long the deceased had been suffering from the illness. After that came learning the various codes for 'neoplasms' (cancers and similar conditions). I only had to turn to Simon for assistance a couple of times during the day, and made just one or two mistakes on each batch, mostly from having to guess between two possible codes.

Stopped by for a quick chat with Jane en route to the loo in mid-morning. We compared notes on our new jobs and shared our delight at no longer being on the phones! After a little reminiscence on how horrendous it was doing the April to June quarter's phone surveys, we both had to get on...

We had a little team meeting this morning, for Elaine to tell us that with the telephone unit taking on more staff in the autumn, some people from another section will be moving into our part so we're all going to have to squash up a bit tighter to make room for them and clear out some of our clutter and junk. There was a little bit of discussion about who might have to move desks - nothing's been decided yet - but no disagreements among ourselves, I'm happy to say.

Paula texted me just before 1 pm to say she was taking her lunch break and Jane and I went down to the canteen to meet her. Only I opted for a cooked dinner - a very tasty orange roasted chicken that had Jane saying I'd made her hungry, but that she'd wait for food until she got home. Paula went on holiday to Turkey last week, so she had boxes of genuine Turkish Delight for Jane and me. She said the weather was scorchingly hot there; as she wasn't red, I observed "At least you didn't burn," but she said that she did and that she's peeling everywhere.

Back in my department, I offered the Turkish Delight around the others; only Simon had a piece. "He's not dieting," Chris smiled. Some things don't change - like in the telephone unit, my lady colleagues have caught the summer dieting bug.

Sarah #2 pulled up while I was standing at the bus stop and offered me a lift. It was the first she'd heard of my promotion; she said well done on finally getting out of the telephone unit. As it was two years since we'd said more than an occasional hello when bumping into each other in the canteen, we caught up on the drive home. Unsurprisingly she says the coding section is a whole lot nicer now with the new boss there. She wanted some shopping and I needed a brown loaf, so we stopped at the Onestop in Alverstoke where all the gossip was about a local woman who's on a TV show called Come Dine With Me this week - Sarah actually knows her.

Home to water the tomatoes and watch the cricket.
