My first day was all well and good, IT hiccups notwithstanding. On arrival, I was met by Sue, my new line manager, showing me the stationery cupboard and inviting me to load myself up with pens, pencils, a ruler, highlighters and Post-Its, then shown to my desk.

The initial idea had been that I'd spend the day working on the beginners' dummy data. Unfortunately, when I tried logging into the system I got an error message. Elaine, my new boss, and Sue, my new line manager, wandered over to take a look but found that what I needed hadn't been set up for me. So Elaine, not a happy bunny, spent the morning and early afternoon on the phone to the IT people chasing them up to sort it out - and fix the problems of another newbie in the adjacent section.

Fortunately, there was something else I had to be shown, the Anatomy & Physiology Course. Elaine logged into her own account to get that up on my workstation. Caroline had said I'd be virtually a qualified doctor when I'd finished reading that; she wasn't far wrong. Interrupted just for myself and Matt, the other newbie, to have an introductory chat with Elaine, for me to occasionally quench my thirst at the water cooler, and for lunch, I came to learn plenty about the human body and its organs, though I'd only got two thirds of the way through by 5.30, and as I spent the day making copious notes from the course, I left the office with a serious case of finger ache. Meanwhile, at 2 pm one of the IT bods showed up to say they'd got my network access fixed and set up the shortcuts I need.

Sue broke the news that there were no vending machines nearby and that everyone brings their own milk and tea or coffee and keeps them in the fridge and cupboards in the kitchen area (marking their possessions, presumably with Post-Its).

There was little conversation; we all mostly just sit quietly and get on with our work, with just the odd remark exchanged. I did, though, meet Jane who used to be in the telephone unit with me and now works in a distant corner of my new open-plan area and have a quick chat with her. Sue took time out to give me the info on how to set up my phone (yes, I now have my very own extension) and to give me my leave book and explain how to put in for annual leave and flex days, and just before she went home she warned me to start shutting down at least ten minutes early as our PCs are slow moving.

Then she left me to do the last 20 minutes with just Val, the lady who'd interviewed me for another job many months ago, on the other side for company. My PC actually shut down pretty quick so I killed the time wandering around the place reading the humorous posters on the cupboard doors.

Stopped off at Waitrose on the way home for milk and coffee.
