Jan. 27th, 2009 02:07 pmSpent this morning's Family History class looking up my relatives on the FreeBMD site, an index of birth, marriage and death records, and building up my family tree on Ancestry.co.uk. I found my great-grandmother in a couple of other users' public trees so was able to take information from those and I'm now back to 1782 along one branch; most of my ancestors were from either Southampton or South Wales. Had to correct a few of the entries other people had made, as sometimes when they'd entered a birthplace as Southampton the site assumed it was Southampton, Virginia instead of the English one. In one case, where all that was known about someone's birthplace was that it was 'South Wales', that was assumed to be a village of that name in New York State! Despite the site having a .co.uk domain name, Americanisation struck again on birth and marriage dates; when I entered, for example, my date of birth as '04/05/1971' the site assumed this to be 5 April and I had to change it to the unambiguous '04 May'.
Only an hour's driving lesson today as Peter has flu. Open road driving not too bad, apart from going round a couple of corners too fast through not applying enough brake. The only manoeuvre we tried was a turn in the road; went OK apart from stopping too soon before reaching the far side of the road on the first leg and stalling when I tried to move the rest of the way forward.
