Nov. 29th, 2008 06:46 pmThe HawkSupport coach picked me up at the Roundabout Hotel between Fareham and Portchester - where I got a pre-match Kopparberg - en route to the game at E*******h. As we approached the ground, a little group of local junior chavs gave us wanker signs while one of them kissed the club badge on his shirt. The same kids walked past us as we were standing at pitchside before the game - they were well quiet then.
The Hawk army were in good voice, especially giving stick to Judas Baird, Judas Jordan and Judas Binman, but the match was gruesome. The ref was one of the type that blow up for anything and don't let the game flow. Hawks came forward plenty of times and Gary Elphick had a header tipped over the bar, but couldn't get the ball into the net, and a few minutes before half-time the Beasts took the lead when a cross from the wing split our defence open and their striker pounced from close range. Meanwhile Mark was instructed by a none too friendly steward to get off the metal steps leading up to the 'executive lounge' (Portakabin) yet at the start of the second half, when we'd moved to the far end, we saw an E*******h fan allowed to go on the steps and stay there long enough to put two flags up.
For the second half we were under cover, which was just as well as early on driving rain broke out and carried on for the rest of the game, but Hawks performed no better and occasional forays into the Beasts' penalty area came to nothing. Despite our poor form this season most Hawks fans have remained solidly behind Shaun Gale, but on 77 minutes, when Galey took off Paul Booth, a striker who'd been playing fairly well, and brought on Brett Poate, a section of our support went into open mutiny, chanting at Galey "You don't know what you're doing". Seven minutes from the end a Spitefires sub took a shot from wide out on the wing and made it 2-0 and from there there was no coming back. During the dying minutes most of us moved round to a vantage point close by the exit in order to get straight out and onto the coach as soon as the final whistle went. Malc even left before the 90 minutes were up - he said he wouldn't have been able to bear the sight of Judas Jordan celebrating on the pitch at the end.
What hurt worst was it was the first time ever we've lost to that lot. One hardcore Hawks fan said as we got on the coach "I've always stuck by Galey up till now, but that's it." I'm not sure yet as to whether we need a managerial change, but something has to happen to turn our form around otherwise relegation is a real possibility.
Got to go watch Harry Hill's TV Burp.
