Nov. 24th, 2008 03:32 pmMy maelstrom of emotion from yesterday, plus outright annoyance at having my footie programme wrecked, the continuing irritation of my cold, and a Monday morning shift did not make an ideal combination. Sue #3 and Sue #5 were kind enough to listen, and things went mostly OK on the phones - until, just into the final hour, I got a non-resident daughter who at first seemed to just be saying that it wasn't convenient for her elderly mother to do the survey at the moment, but ended up stroppily telling me (without consulting her mother) that we were never to contact her again, and when I asked if there was any reason she snapped "I'm telling you". End of call.
I chucked my headphones against the back of my booth, but nobody asked me what was wrong, though several of the women in the next two rows just sat there gawping. Two minutes later I got a lady on her mobile who didn't seem to understand what I was saying, and when I repeated what I was trying to ask her there was a long silence and she hung up. I called back, got her voicemail and left our standard message, but in the mood I was in, once I'd left the message I hurled my headset again. Not long after that Jo, one of the duty supervisors, came over and asked if I wanted to take a break. I'd already used up my full break quota and told her. She asked if I wanted to go get a drink, but I wasn't thirsty. I told her I had a cold and had had a couple of annoying people; she said not to worry, "we all get horrible people sometimes," but we didn't get to talk further as at that point the guy I was trying answered, I had to talk to him and Jo went back to the desk. The last half-hour of the shift went by quietly.
I need a goddamn holiday.
