Well, I'm going to be working Christmas Eve after all.
Heading out of the unit for a health and safety break (and a coffee), I passed the shift swap board and noticed Kim #2 putting up a request near the bottom of the December column. She was talking to Paul. Taking a closer look, I saw the date someone wanted out of was Christmas Eve, but didn't look at who was making the request. "Someone wants out of Christmas Eve, then?" I remarked to the two of them.
"That's me," smiled Kim. I glanced back at the slip. Sure enough, the name was hers. "I don't want to work Christmas Eve," she added.
On my way down to the canteen, and for about the next hour, in my mind I churned over whether to do the decent thing and do the swap with her. Although I don't much like working on Christmas Eve because you get a lot of refusals and grumpies that day, having the day off probably means more to Kim #2 than it does for me. So at the start of the final quarter-hour, when I came off the phones, while my workstation was logging into my e-mail account I went over to her and told her I'd do Christmas Eve and she could do my Monday 29 December shift (at least I was getting rid of one in the dead period between Christmas and New Year which isn't a barrel of fun either). Kim was delighted and said I was "an absolute star".
