Oct. 5th, 2008 07:57 pmAnother early start to see the Hawk girls away to Wycombe Wanderers. Arrived at High Wycombe in plenty of time - before noon - but although I had the directions to get to the pitch on foot, it was a long way out and it was absolutely pelting down with rain, so I took a taxi. The driver found Derehams Lane without any trouble but had no idea where the Loudwater football pitch was. After he took me to a cemetery, and started to go along a very bumpy and muddy track before rapidly deciding to turn back, he finally found the sign reading 'Loudwater Sports Club'. I couldn't see a football pitch anywhere so started walking further along the road, till Liz pulled up alongside me, signalled to me to get in her car, and brought me back to the sign. She explained that the pitch was at the end of a grass pathway.
Liz parked in a car park at the top of a little hill and those of us who were there waited for Rob and Lisa. It rained and rained on. Eventually someone opened up the little clubhouse for us - although there would be no-one there today to open the bar, it was at least a refuge from the rain for me, Simon, Trev, injured players Charlie and Telé, and Taylor (player awaiting international clearance) while Rob, Dick, Lisa and the players involved today hit the dressing room. There was a TV with Freeview, so we put Sky Sports News on, and also a dartboard and set of darts, which kept Charlie, Telé and Taylor amused. They were tempted by the pool table but decided shifting the sheet of chipboard covering it would be too much effort.
Despite the downpour, the pitch was in pretty good nick, and by kick off the rain had eased off. Wycombe were a strong, if not skilful, side and gave our girls the toughest match they'd yet had this season, but we won 2-1 with a close-range strike from Sally and a beautiful curler into the top corner from the half way line by Kerry.
In the clubhouse after, there were the customary nibbles provided for the players, and an enterprising Wycombe player did her best to make up for the lack of bar staff by selling cans of Coke and Diet Coke for 50p. Simon, after hearing my taxi saga, initially offered me just a lift back to High Wycombe station, but Jenna D suggested they take me all the way to Fareham and he agreed. Thanks babe! Bus to Gosport Best for a chicken doner and home to learn Rachel had made the final 12 of X Factor 5 :)
