It's happy 50th birthday to Mary Slaney (née Decker), one of the icons of my early teens, when I was a serious athletics fanatic. I managed to find her daughter on Facebook, so sent the young lady a message asking her to wish her mama a very happy 50th from me and explaining I'd been a fervent fan.

As I was getting a coffee from the machine in the lounge just before going into the telephone unit to start my shift, Paul appeared. He said hello, and asked "What are you doing here? I thought you were on holiday." "No, not this week," I replied with an ironic grin.

"Oh, you're off next week, then?"

"No, I've got no hols coming up."

He was puzzled, but just said "Oh, I'm confused then" and left it at that. After his behaviour on Friday, I still left him well alone all day today. Sent an e-mail to Pat at the end of the shift asking her to arrange the two corrections to my work pattern that still need doing - fingers crossed.
