Jun. 8th, 2008 10:02 pmAt the end of Austria v Croatia, I hopped over to ITV to see what was going on at the Canadian Grand Prix. To my delight Nick Heidfeld was in the lead, but I knew straight away from the commentators' tone that something major had happened. It wasn't long before I learned Lewis Hamilton had crashed into the back of Raikkonen in the pit lane, taking both of them out. While there was a little karmic satisfaction to be had at Raikkonen meeting the same fate that Sutil suffered at his hands in Monaco, I didn't waste time lingering on that thought - a BMW boy was in front and that was all that mattered.
After everyone had pitted, the bad news was that Heidfeld lost the lead.
The good news was that ROBERT KUBICA was now in front and assured of victory barring accidents.
And Robert held on. Meanwhile Alonso mounted a challenge to Heidfeld for second but went skidding out of the race. From that moment a BMW 1-2 was assured. And David Coulthard took third - does it get any better than this?
Although Germany v Poland had kicked off by then, I had to delay switching back to the football until I'd seen the awards ceremony and Kubica spraying the Mumm. So, funnily enough, while I missed the beginning of the match, I still heard the Polish and German national anthems...
