Cider With Rosie
May. 4th, 2008 05:33 pmAnd so to Fort Blockhouse for Hawks Ladies' match with Oxford. A win would give the girls promotion, and for me the game took on a double extra significance. Not only would winning today mean the girls won promotion on my birthday for the second year in a row, but I'm unable to get to their one remaining match, at Newbury on Tuesday night. So I was desperate for them to do the business.
As I arrived, the girls, who were doing training routines beside the pitch, launched into a chorus of 'Happy Birthday To You'. Lisa also wished me a happy birthday, Becky came up to give me a birthday kiss, and her fellow WAG Rosie poured me a plastic pint glassful of cider. She, her friend Niki, and Bernadette asked me what I'd be doing to celebrate. I said I'd be going round to my best friend Katherine's, "and maybe she'll put The Full Monty on." I was, of course, referring to the film of that name which is on ITV1 tonight, but that didn't stop the ladies putting their own lewd interpretation on my words, and Rosie said she'd have to remember that phrase for future use! Bernadette wondered whether I really was thinking I might have a chance with Katherine; I explained that she is happily married and Bernadette's reply was "That doesn't stop some people."
Sam's mum Rose presented me with a card from all the family, and as the girls trooped back out for kick-off Michelle handed me one signed by all the players and staff. Rosie said Oxford were fielding several first-team players; with that, and when continued Hawks pressure failed to produce a goal, I began to wonder whether my birthday was about to get ruined, until on 24 minutes Sam struck a low shot that hit one post, rolled across the goal and bounced off the other post into the net.
From then on there was no stopping the Hawk ladies. By half-time we'd scored four without reply, and we ran out 10-0 winners. Star of the show was Chantelle with a hat-trick of beautiful goals; Eskimo Jen also scored three. For the last goal Jodie sent in a cross that an Oxford defender headed into her own net. Jo, who'd been subbed, joked that Jodie would claim the goal; we all laughed as it was an obvious own goal, but when Trevor phoned the result through to The News he actually gave it to Jodie.
At the final whistle Rob gathered everyone around, said a few congratulatory words before reminding the girls they still had the title to play for on Tuesday night, then announced "but we are...PROMOTED!" and sprayed everyone with a water bottle. By now Jodie had already taken her top off and was parading in her lime green sports bra. Eskimo Jen had also stripped down to her underoos, and got chased round the pitch by Rob spraying the water bottle.
As Jodie, Michelle and Claire sat on the paving slabs outside the door to the dressing room area stripping their boots off, I chatted to them and they asked if I was coming for a drink with them. I agreed.
When the girls had got changed and showered we all sat in the little coffee lounge. Lisa had laid sandwiches on for the players of both teams, and from somewhere a crate of bottles of beer appeared. Jo handed me one and said "Happy birthday" - a lot of the girls clinked their bottles with mine and said the same. For a while we all just talked among ourselves basking in the glory of promotion, while Lisa canvassed the girls' votes for Man of the Match (won by Chantelle) and Dick of the Day (Billie for tripping over the rope around the pitch and falling flat on her face). Then the girls began to disperse - Becky gave me another birthday kiss - and when Michelle and Claire left as part of a big group no-one said anything about going on anywhere for a drink. Instead, I heard Penny say they'd all be going to The Goose pub in Southsea tonight. So when Jodie and her group, the last to leave, started to move I just said bye to them and they just said "see you Saturday." No matter, they'd given me the best birthday present they could already.
