Apr. 12th, 2008 11:44 pmThe perils of giving up hope too soon. After the 1-1 draw at E*******h I'd been sure Hawks' chances of the play-offs were gone, so decided to give today's game at Bromley a miss and splashed out on a couple of CDs, a book and a ticket to see Half A Sixpence at the Mayflower later this month. Of course, Hawks then won their next two games to put us right back in the picture, and my luxury purchases had left me without enough dosh to get to Bromley.
So I had to settle for Moneyfields v Wimborne Town. On both previous occasions that I've been to watch Moneys, it rained. Today it kept dry while I was walking up from the Hard to Commercial Road, but when rain started to lash down while I was standing at the bus stop and kept it up all through the ride I was beginning to think I was the Moneyfields Rain God. By the time I left the clubhouse to go into the ground, though, the rain had stopped and it stayed dry for the rest of the afternoon.
Today they were serving grub in the clubhouse, so I was able to try a Moneyfields bacon roll. At £1.50, it's great value compared to other grounds as you get a baguette with two full-length bacon rashers in. Very tasty too. Because I got served at 2.50, I had to carry my butty, paper plate and all, into the ground - going to the tea hut for a Bovril, the tea lady said "You're naughty, bringing food in here when we've got food. Slap on the wrist next time."
Two evenly matched sides played out a decent game, and 1-1 was a fair result. Malc texted me at half time to say Hawks were 1-0 up through Rocky. Under other circumstances I might have stayed in the clubhouse after and watched Portsmouth v Newcastle on the big screen to the accompaniment of a couple of Bombardiers, but Dr Who was coming on and I'd arranged to go round Katherine's tonight, where I knew we'd be sharing a bottle of wine. So I just hung around long enough to see the Hawks score come in - bah, lost 2-1. At least I felt better about missing it.
The play-off dream isn't all over, but we have to win all our last three games (thankfully all at home) and hope that two out of Fisher, Bishop's Stortford and E*******h slip up.
Just got back from a convivial evening in the company of Katherine, Mike and a bottle of festive Asti. Must go hit the hay now as I've got an early start in the morning. 'Night all.
