Feb. 3rd, 2008 09:30 pmTo Banbury to see the Hawk Ladies.
The Banbury United girls get to play at their men's team's ground, so we had the luxury of a proper clubhouse bar, and this is Hook Norton country, so they served real ale :D As I supped my pre-match Hooky Bitter, all the Banbury people there asked if I'd been at Liverpool. I also met the Banbury first-choice goalie, who's sitting this season out as she's in the family way - due mid-March so she'll be back between the sticks come August - and her partner. She told me how two of her team-mates had fallen pregnant at the same time as her, dealing quite a blow to the squad. Trevor asked if I'd be coming to The News Sports Awards with the girls tomorrow night: alas, I'm on evening shift.
A proper ground meant a proper stand to sit in - it was still freezing all afternoon, though! Banbury had a few fans there, both male and female, friends of some of their players. Hearing me cheering for their opponents, they asked me who we were. When I replied "Havant & Waterlooville," they were well impressed - that's what a Cup run does for you. One guy immediately phoned a friend to say "You're never going to believe who the Ladies are playing..."
The game was an even contest for the first half hour, then Sam took a pass from Jenna D, sambaed past one defender, nutmegged the goalie and put Hawks one up. From that moment the game was played in the Banbury half, and although their 'keeper made some fine saves we ran out 7-0 winners. Lynn, who's living in Northampton now, came along with Kerri, it was nice to catch up with them but they left with a quarter of an hour to go because it was just too cold for comfort for Kerri's little lass.
Moseyed on into Banbury town centre for a bite to eat. Found the Banbury Kebab House, but they had no eat-in area so had to eat in the station foyer - at least that was handy for a tasty cup of mocha coffee from the café.
