Jan. 12th, 2008 07:01 pmHavant & Waterlooville v St Albans. As I entered the clubhouse Mark stopped me and said "Since we didn't get round to it last Saturday" and hugged me. He explained to Baz and Bill that "the FA Cup Hug's a tradition" but that he hadn't spotted me at Swansea.
Notices around the clubhouse and ground announced that tickets for the replay had sold out. There was a buzz around the place about the replay, though a little tempered by the 4-1 defeat midweek. On the PA Trevor, with a smile, told people to see Malcolm if they want to come on the away trips to "Newport, Liverpool or Thurrock" after advising us to arrive early on Wednesday night and apologising to those of us whose usual seats will be roped off to make way for the increased press presence. Running down the forthcoming fixtures, for the 26th he said "Hopefully we'll be away to Liverpool, though if things don't go our way on Wednesday...[dramatic pause]...we'll instead be at home to Weston-super-Mare." The old guys in front of me had a wry chuckle at the contrast. Most people were more concerned with getting a win today, as if you can't beat the team propping up the table, at home, you've got problems.
But St Albans took the lead after just four minutes, and for a long spell at the start of the match Hawks weren't at the races. In a curious twist, it was wantaway Tom Jordan who saved the day with two brilliant goals. His second, on 70 minutes, breathed life into what had been an unremarkable game and the rest of the match was exciting stuff. The sponsors deservedly gave Jordan man of the match - now that E*******h's interest in him has died because they won't meet our asking price, perhaps this will mark his rehabilitation into the Hawk fold. A stream of early leavers had already filed out when sub Craig Watkins made sure, netting a third during the closing minutes. Hope that teaches them to stay for the full game.
Home for Harry Hill's TV Burp.
