Jan. 7th, 2008 10:18 pmA red-letter morning - I spoke to my darling Kate Lawler.
On the Kerrang Radio breakfast show which she co-presents, they were talking about how two people could become welded together if they cut their skin and held the cuts together for long enough, then invited people to text in saying who they'd like to be welded to. I picked Kate herself, and to my astonishment seconds later my phone rang - they wanted me live on air! It was mostly her co-host Tim Shaw who spoke to me, but Kate did talk to me too - earlier she'd said she'd want to be welded to someone who liked their food, so when I told Tim "I love my food so she'd never be short of grub with me around" Kate asked what I'd feed her, so I told her "Chicken and chips, and plenty of cakes because we know you love those". That went down well with Kate - though Tim reckoned I was a wack job...
Got to the office early as usual to grab lunch in the canteen, and had the TV in the coffee lounge tuned to BBC2 well in time for the FA Cup fourth round draw. While I waited Alan came up to me to ask about the Swansea game. By the time it came on at 1.30 about a dozen other blokes had joined me - Paul and Dan came over to me and said they hoped Hawks got a good draw. A few of the ladies sitting chatting at tables groaned about the male invasion, one said "I want to watch Loose Women! Where's the control?" while another wheedled "Can I watch Neighbours?" and was told "No chance!" by Paul. When Swansea or Hawks were drawn away to Luton or Liverpool, a couple of guys said "Good draw" to me. Later several people asked me "So will you go to Anfield?" If we get there, nothing will keep me away, but I'm keeping my feet firmly on the ground. There's the little matter of a replay with Swansea yet, who are, after all, full-time pros and, after the ugly tempers on Saturday, will be doubly motivated. So until the replay, that's the only Cup tie I'm thinking about.
I'd been sneezing non-stop last night, so was expecting today's shift to be hard going, but my cold didn't cause me much trouble at all. Here's hoping I'm over the worst now, touch wood. And I had loads of internal e-mails - enough to take me off the phones for half an hour :) Among my e-mails was one from Pat, my line manager, asking to borrow my pink holiday book as there was 'some confusion' about my leave entitlement. So when I next got up to go to the water cooler I fetched my holiday book and handed it to Pat, who said she'd like to keep it for a day or two as she thought I might be entitled to some additional hours' leave. If there is a correction needed, that's the way round you want it to be.
