Nov. 12th, 2007 11:25 pmTo Westleigh Park this evening for Hawks' Setanta Shield match with Lewes. Booked my seat on the coach to Nottingham with Malc in the club shop before kick-off. As I stepped out, a lady from HawkSupport handed me an envelope containing five books of Christmas raffle tickets to sell.
As it was a chilly night and just a minor cup, only the hard core turned out for this game. Making the PA announcements at the beginning, Trevor said "I had hoped after our FA Cup success we'd get a big crowd tonight. Obviously not." When he said that there'd be extra time and penalties tonight if needed, the lady behind me groaned "Oh, I hope not, I'll miss I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here."
"You've missed it anyway," I told her, "it's on at nine."
"Oh yes," she mused sadly. I said "I'm a fan of that, so I know how you feel, but Hawks come first." Meanwhile a bloke in her group - who later said he plays for local semi-pro side VT FC - protested "Stop talking about telly. I came here tonight to get away from the telly!"
It was an exciting end-to-end match. Rocky Baptiste had an absolute stinker, but still put Hawks one up from the penalty spot on 25 minutes before being pulled off just after half-time.
Early in the second half, Lewes scored three goals in quick succession. Hawks never gave up, battled for the rest of the game and were rewarded on 65 minutes when Andy Gurney fired home after a goalmouth scramble, but the Lewes defence stood firm enough for the rest of the game to deny us an equaliser.
Into the clubhouse for a Magners and the last 10 minutes of Reading v Arsenal, then walked to the station to find the train home had been delayed, so had to stand around on the platform in the cold for over 10 minutes.
I used up a day's holiday, for that?
