Hawks v Leighton Town, FA Cup 4th Qually. The first half-hour was dull, dull, dull, and Havant were struggling until on 35 minutes a speculative chip from Andy Gurney bounced awkwardly over the keeper and Rocky ran in to poke it home. From then on we dominated the game. Although Hawks' display was still nothing special, Richard Pacquette netted two well-taken goals to seal the win.

And so we all piled into the clubhouse to watch the 1st Round draw. A bunch of boisterous Leighton fans set up camp around one of the tables and unfurled a giant banner reading 'Leighton Town Wild Idiots'. They kept up chanting 'Ten German Bombers' and other drunken chants all through the draw. Fortunately the teams appeared on the screen as they were drawn. Everyone wanted Leeds (surprisingly, no-one mentioned Nottingham Forest who were surely just as desirable) and a huge groan went up when Leeds were drawn away to Hereford. There were sighs of relief all round every time we weren't paired with an unattractive draw, and everyone was happy enough when we finally appeared, drawn away to York. Several Hawks fans standing near me whom I didn't know personally shook my hand.

Venturing into the bar next door, I spotted Malc, who said he'd already put my name down for the York trip and that it'd be £20 and we'd be leaving from Westleigh Park at 7 am. (Looking at the club messageboard just now, he's moved that up to 6.30. As that means setting off before the Gosport ferry starts running, it looks like I'm facing an expensive taxi ride unless I can persuade one of our Southampton based supporters to pick me up in Fareham. Update : Simon has just replied to my text to say he should be able to. Fingers crossed.)

As I was walking along the Eastern Road to the station, Malc and Aly pulled up alongside me and offered me a lift there. When I'd got in, they said some Leighton fans were creating mayhem in the clubhouse and they wanted to get me to the station and onto a train before the Leighton lot got there. They didn't know it was replacement buses today. I had a 7 minute wait before the Portsmouth bus left, but no Leighton nutters arrived during that time.

It seems we Brits are starting to do Halloween the American way - just plain fancy dress, not necessarily related to witchcraft. Coming off the ferry at Portsmouth as I got on were a group including two Batmen, one Robin and Morticia Addams (I guess she qualifies as in the true spirit of Halloween).

Home for the last few performances on X Factor. Niki's rendition of My Heart Will Go On was beautiful. I do hope she makes the final, though I'm loyally still voting for Same Difference. Spoke to Jade on the phone after the results show : she hates Same Difference (she did say 'sorry' before she said it)...
