Aug. 12th, 2007 11:53 pmTo the Cellars at Eastney to see Attila the Stockbroker. When I arrived Attila was sitting at the bar, with a real ale of course, and we had a quick chat about footie till the sound man called him across for a technical discussion. The support were a young local band called Time For Action, who did some decent songs.
Attila was superb as always. He began the set with half an hour of his poetry, including the ancient classic Russians In The DHSS followed by its recent sequel Asylum Seeking Daleks, a brilliant new one called Poison Pensioner about an insufferable aged relative, and Supermodel - dedicated to "the superb Chinese take-away across the road, in the hope that its subjects will eat there and do themselves some good". After the Eminem parody Effineff, it was on with the mandola for a cracking set of songs beginning with Baghdad Ska. Guy Fawkes's Table, Comandante Joe and Scumball Pinochet were standouts and I was delighted that near the end of the set Attila included my favourite, And I Won't Run Away. There was time for a few more poems, including The Iron Men Of Rap and The Bible According To Murdoch. It was those very poems I'd first discovered Attila with 16 years ago: hearing them again now, just for a moment it felt like it was those crazy days once more and I was a student again. The nostalgia continued with Attila's penultimate song Tyler Smiles, then we came bang up to date as he segued into Maggots 1 Maggie 0. In response to the roar for an encore, Attila came back on and gave us the first two poems of the Joseph Porter's Sleeping Bag trilogy. (I hope the omission of the third doesn't mean Joseph and Annie's marriage has gone Pete Tong.)
Top gig.
