Aug. 4th, 2007 06:50 pmTo West Leigh Park for Havant & Waterlooville's last pre-season friendly, with Salisbury. After the long summer break it was good to be back in the clubhouse drinking a pre-match Magners and meeting up with some of the rest of the crowd. As I climbed the steps of the stand to take my seat for the game, Trevor said they'd read out my letter to the Mayor of Havant at the Ladies' team's civic reception yesterday. He hadn't known I'd been the catalyst in getting them the invitation - he'd "thought we just had admirers on Havant Council" and thanked me. He told me the girls are still without a goalie - they failed to sign Sadie, who they were after - so either Naomi or Kay will be stuck with going in goal for the time being, but apart from that, and Sam J's departure to Pompey Uni, they've kept last season's squad together.
The match was very patchy and dull, and Hawks were disappointing and lost 2-1. The only bright spot was a well taken goal from new signing Jamie Slabber, when Hawks looked dead and buried at 2-0 down with 17 minutes to go, but the momentum didn't last.
Roll on the first game next week.
