Jul. 16th, 2007 11:07 pmWent to The Villagers' performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor this evening. I particularly enjoyed this one as I'd never seen or read the play. During the brief welcome by Glyn the director, she warned us we'd have to watch out for mosquitos and said anyone who wanted could be sprayed with Aeroguard. No-one took her up - we all regretted it, as throughout the night the mossies constantly buzzed round us all. I got a few bites.
Sally Evans and Suzanne Shuttleworth were best, as the wives, and if my pal Daniel had been there he'd no doubt have said Nigel Dean was 'playing Nigel yet again'! The cast all performed very well, though the prompter was audibly called into service a few times. When I spoke to Aussie during the interval and said the show was superb, he reckoned I was being generous. About five minutes from the end, torrential rain suddenly came down and carried on relentlessly from then on. The cast gamely battled on through the final scene, though one actress included an 'I'm wet' and another gave a new emphasis to her line 'Let's all go in'! As the Mayor was there, one guy was meant to make a little speech at the end, but as most of the audience started running for cover the moment the final scene ended, he kept it just to 'Thanks to the Mayor and to you all for coming, we're here till Thursday so please tell your families and friends' then disappeared...
