Jun. 13th, 2007 07:46 pmWithout thinking, wore one of my best shirts to work. That drew comments of "Looking very smart today, Wilhelmus" from a few of the ladies; one even asked if I was going on anywhere nice after. "No, unfortunately."
Walked over to the college for their Adult Education Open Evening. One of the first people I met was Colin, who immediately asked if he could have a word once I'd found out what I came for. The greeting lady handed me a prospectus and info sheet about the college's own ECDL course starting in September, then asked one of the student volunteers to "take me to the Royal Sailors' Rest" where I'd be told all about the course. Thinking I was going to be escorted to the actual Royal Sailors' Rest, which was over a mile away, as it was raining, I was hoping there'd be a minibus or someone giving me a lift there. Next thing, though, I was being shown into a little side room, where tutors from the Royal Sailors' Rest were sitting at tables receiving visitors. After a little confusion as to which of them should be attending to me, a friendly lady took out another information sheet and explained the structure of the course to me, and added what I already knew - there's a 15% discount if you enrol before 20 July. That's good news, although I'll have to wait until pay day at the end of this month.
I have a choice of the college's course, held at a local school, on Tuesday evenings, or the Royal Sailors' Rest on Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings or Thursday evenings. I'm going for the Tuesday evening one, as the school is nearer my home than the RSR (although it's still a fair trek); I have other plans for my Monday daytimes; with the best will in the world I can live without hauling my carcass out of bed to have breakfast, get ready and get over to the other side of town for a 9.30 start; all the local blood donation sessions are on Thursdays; and I'd rather watch UEFA Cup on Thursday nights than Champions' League on Tuesdays.
Colin took me aside and explained that the college is hoping to host a series of events next term to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and asked if I'd promote the events to the people who were students there at the same time as me. I'm happy to do that - I'll e-mail everyone who's on Friends Reunited. He also asked me to write an article for the college magazine about the history of the college; I explained I'd need some help covering the 18 years since I left so he agreed to co-write it with me. I also spoke briefly to Richard and Ken, a couple of tutors from my time who are still there; they were both under the impression at first that my mother and I were still in mayoral office.
While I was talking to Ken, a familiar voice said hello to me. It was Jade. She was holding info sheets on several courses - she said she was planning to do more than one. She updated me on how her volunteering's going and all her TV viewing. When she asked if I'd been watching BB8, I just told her I haven't bothered this year. She's still looking forward to the Gosport Festival, but reckoned she'd only come on the Friday and the Sunday - she's really disappointed that Slade, headlining on Saturday, are now Noddy-less...
