Another fairly busy shift. Thank goodness, no-one tried to involve me in any BB conversations - indeed, I didn't hear any directly, though I think some of the girls might well have been discussing it while I was interviewing. Later I was engaged in another call when someone put a piece of paper on my desk saying 'Sarah says meet her downstairs at 2.30 if you want a lift home'. So at 2.30 I was sitting by the back door when lots of the girls passed by on their way out, surprised to see me there as they thought I'd left half an hour ago!

Ate at McDonald's at teatime, then over to Portsmouth football ground to give blood. Walking up to the ground I sensed that feeling of my shoe sole being uncomfortably thin. A quick examination showed that, for the second time in a row, I had indeed worn my shoe sole to papery fragility in just over a month. That does it - no more will I trust my local shoe shop's assurances that this or that brand have strong soles. On Monday I'll be back in Portsmouth buying DMs - their durability far outweighs the extra cost. Thank goodness my mother's lending me my spending money for Mariehamn...

In contrast to my Thorngate experience I was seen for my preliminary questioning and pinprick almost as soon as I'd sat down, and was called to go and lie down just as rapidly, though then my carer, Alan, said something to me about 'if you leave things to management they always get it wrong' (?) and I was then on the bed waiting for several minutes, until they finished with the guy on the next bed - only then did they see to me. Just like last time, Alan then had trouble finding a vein, so much so that he deflated the pressure armband and called a male nurse over. The nurse identified a vein in the side of my arm, and he and Alan agreed that would be better than trying for the 'indistinct' one in my elbow dip, then we were under way.

When the nurse asked me to give my address to check it against the form, he said "You live in sunny Gosport? Why are you donating in Fratton?" I explained about the family party that me ma had thoughtlessly plonked on the day of the Gosport donation session, but I couldn't make out his reply. To be honest, I liked the Fratton donation experience better. I was done fairly quickly, and laid on the bed, eyes shut, for a few minutes till I felt ready to haul my carcass over to the refreshment table for a cup of coffee and a packet of Ginger Nuts. Sat consuming them while studying my Swedish textbook (whispered the Swedish answers to a couple of the exercises, drawing a curious glance from one of the people at my table, but the more practice I get speaking the language the better). When I'd finished both the chapter and the coffee and biscuits, loped down to the bus stop on Goldsmith Avenue.

Home to rest with the Two Ronnies on ITV3 and plenty of coffee and soft drinks.
