Work today, on a swap with Lesley. I had a really busy time, loads of people were in and willing to do the interview now. Just one lady hung up on me, and she was rather stressed because her husband was ill. On the nibbles table were just Friday's leftovers, but they went round. Paula asked me what I'd thought of the Eurovision, especially Scooch; she agreed with my verdict that it might have had a chance in the ESC circa 1980, but now it just looks and sounds embarrasingly cheesy.

Lorna approached me as I was on my way to one of my mini-breaks, and asked if I'd had the e-mail from Mary asking for people to start at nine and knock off at two for a trial period. She'd immediately thought of me, as she's seen me running for the 2.38 bus enough times. During mini-break I thought about it, as the bus generally gets me to the office comfortably before nine, and when I came back I told Lorna I was interested. She said to e-mail Mary. I did, but thanks to my last interview only ending at 2.26 I didn't have time to check if she'd replied.

I got home to find confirmation of my blood donation appointment for Thursday the 24th at 6.30. But since I made the appointment months ago, my mother has thoughtfully plonked a thank-you party on that night; she'll be offended if I don't go, but I'll be in no condition for partying straight after giving blood. So, sighing, I phoned the National Blood Service helpline and rescheduled my donation for the 31st, meaning instead of giving in Gosport I have to trek over to Portsmouth football ground.

Back to college tonight. Anne and Helen saw me drinking my pre-class Red Bull in the canteen as they came in, and asked "Red Bull? Are you doing an exam tonight?" Spent the first half-hour of class just standing around, as I'd done all the Desktop Publishing exercises on the table and Joan wanted to see to all the others first.

Karen, Anne and Di admired my 'Rola Cola' T-shirt. Karen asked if there really was such a thing as Rola Cola, so I told them yes, it had been around in the eighties, and more recently Peter Kay had done a routine about it, prompting the creation of the T-shirts. Karen said she'd like a T-shirt reading 'Mrs Depp'. "Or 'Mrs Barlow'" she added, "for Gary, but then people would have thought I was Deirdre!" Anne and I were laughing, as we'd thought she'd meant Ken until she said Gary. I mused that I'm an Anne-Marie Duff fan, but people might take it the wrong way if I wore a 'Mr Duff' T-shirt. Karen and Di immediately thought of 'Duff beer' in The Simpsons...

When I finally got to see Joan she printed and loaded a new exercise for me. It took me the whole class to get it done, as I was really wrestling with a lot of aspects of Publisher, and I had the devil's own job adjusting the sizes of the text blocks to keep all the body-text sections equal and make the whole thing fit the columns exactly. I got done at 8.56 - Anne was surprised to see me going, as she and a lot of others were in the middle of Joan giving them a demonstration and had no idea it was time for end of class. As I was going out the door at 8.59, they still hadn't moved a centimetre.
