May. 2nd, 2007 11:31 pmToday's shift passed fairly quickly, thanks partly to several couples who took a fair while to interview, plus my having to consult the team leaders on how to deal with the odd thorny point in their answers, and also to two staff circulars in my internal e-mail, which between them took me off the phones for over half an hour :)
Calling at WH Smith's on the way home for a copy of The News, the till girl asked if she could interest me in a huge Toblerone for the discount price of 99p. It was tempting, but mindful of the cash I've spent on fripperies in the last two days and the weight I put on last month, I managed to resist.
Tonight was Havant & Waterlooville's play-off semi-final first leg with Braintree. There'd been a lot of hype in The News, firstly with Ian Baird urging football fans all over the Portsmouth area to come along and lend the Hawks their support, then tonight with Braintree manager George Borg running his mouth again about how Havant were 'cheats' and 'bullies'. I knew we'd get a big crowd and the tea-hut queue at half-time would be just horrendous, so wisely stuffed myself with a large Doner in Gosport before travelling over so I wouldn't want to eat again all evening, and half an hour before kick-off I went to the hut and bought two cans of Coke - one for pre-match and one for half-time. Lisa and Jade were standing close by the hut, talking to some of the men's squad and still euphoric from yesterday.
After all that, the actual game was a bit of a wash-out. The bloke next to me went to the clubhouse a couple of minutes before the half-time whistle, then in the first minute of time added on, Braintree scored. When the guy came back from the bar just as the second half kicked off, he flat-out refused to believe that we were 1-0 down and was convinced that I, and his mate who told him so, were having him on! After 70 minutes of a poor game a steady trickle of people began leaving; with five minutes left on the clock dozens more headed for the exit. Serve them right, on 88 minutes Jefferson Louis lobbed the goalie to equalise for Hawks. That galvanised the team into action for the last few minutes but the Braintree defence held firm.
At least the away goals rule isn't in force, but I'm far from confident that we'll get a win up there on Saturday. Ah well, I can live with the men staying down if the girls go up.
