Apr. 29th, 2007 07:28 pmTo Horndean for the girls' double header. Arrived at the ground just as Rob, Lisa and most of the players were all getting out of their cars. Rob and Lisa had news for me - because of the men playing their home play-off on Wednesday, the girls can't use Westleigh Park on Tuesday for the crucial game with Portsmouth Uni. Rob initially said they were looking at postponing the game, and dropped the bombshell that it might be moved to Wednesday 9 May - when I have to go to the Mayor of Havant's installation dinner - but when I explained I'd have to miss the game he said he'd try and get it played on the Tuesday or Thursday instead.
Then Trevor arrived, went off into a corner of the car park to have a conflab with Rob and Lisa, then came over and told me the game would still be played this Tuesday, and that he'd spend this evening and tomorrow trying to find us a pitch so we don't have to play it at the Uni. Phew.
Rob bought me a Magners in the bar and showed me the team. I noticed Sam J was in goal, so asked if Louise was away. Rob said Louise had left the club! He explained that Louise and Sarah F are in a relationship, and they had stomped out of the club over Sarah not getting enough games. I was rocked that we'd lost a good goalie, though I have no sympathy with the two of them as our other defenders were in the team ahead of Sarah on merit. Rob said he was looking to sign a certain very good local 'keeper over the summer.
Wow. One thing this season hasn't been short of is drama both on and off the pitch. As I said, better than BB.
Jade was in high spirits all afternoon, though several times she said "I hate not playing!" and other remarks of that ilk. Halfway through the first game she said "We need to get some singing going", and she spent the rest of the afternoon leading the Hawk girls' watching relatives and friends and me in several football chants, many about individual players. When she started "Penny, get your wand out," and explained that Penny's 'magic right foot' was her wand, Becky said to her "Jade, you're pissed." I did see a Stella or a Magners in her hand a few times, so that may have been a fair assessment.
We picked up the six points, winning 2-0 and 6-0 (all six goals in the second game came in the first half). Sam S scored twice in the first couple of minutes of the second game, then soon after, Jade started the 'Penny, get your wand out' song - and moments later we were awarded a free kick 40 yards out, and Penny took it with her 'magic right foot' and floated it into the net!
The game was held up towards the end when the Horndean number 8 suddenly collapsed on the pitch. After a couple of minutes Ollie told us that he used to teach the girl, and she was a narcoleptic. We had to wait around quite a while until she woke up and could be taken from the pitch.
Getting on the bus, the driver couldn't see the date on my monthly pass, or the words identifying it as a monthly pass (it has faded quite a bit). I told him, truthfully, that its expiry date is today, the 29th; he actually took out a pen and wrote '29th Hants' and a code number on the back.
Got to go do my CLAIT homework.
