Mar. 16th, 2007 05:00 pmWore my official Red Nose Day T-shirt to work this morning, drawing a few approving comments (though Jill and Janet were disappointed I didn't have the nose or the ears).
On logging in, the display was appearing all squashed into the top half of the screen. I went over to the duty team leader - a lady I didn't know - and she came over to fix the problem. Except it became apparent after about a minute that she didn't have the slightest clue how to fix it. After she'd been trying all sorts of things - blatantly guessing all the time - without success for 10 minutes, in the end I suggested trying one option offered, which turned out to be the right one.
There was a big box of butter biscuits on the nibbles table, with a jam jar next to it for Red Nose donations, so I tipped all the loose change I had on me - about 70p - and helped myself to several biscuits over the course of the shift. It was only after I'd tipped all my change into the jar that I realised I'd left myself with only £2 coins so would have to give the bus driver £4 for a £2.05 fare.
One of my interviewees was an Italian man in his sixties who spoke excellent English, but after every question launched into a lengthy speech about his family situation, or how he'd like a second job but his existing job restricts his options, or how he'd had to pay back a great wodge of Council Tax Benefit. It was maddening at the time, but once it was all over I wasn't complaining about a one-adult interview eating 26 minutes of the shift :) At the end, the guy wished me "Happy Easter", surely setting an early bird record.
My payclaim inputted as normal, and I got the 'Your claim has been saved' message, so thought all was well - till an error message appeared on screen saying my claim had 'an unacceptable grid content' within it. And Kevin and Sue #4 had gone. So I have to wait until next Thursday and then ask them to check whether my claim was accepted. Every Friday a problem now. What's the matter with the stupid system? :(
