Jan. 28th, 2007 06:10 pmTo Hamble for the girls' Hampshire Cup match with Red Star. The clubhouse had Greene King IPA on special offer at £1 a pint :)
In footballing terms, the game was a turkey shoot; we dominated from start to end and won 10-2. During the second half a lot of needle crept in, starting when the Red Star number two did a running side-on body-charge on Chantelle, sending her flying off the pitch - and she sprained her wrist when she landed. The ref only gave her a yellow card. A bit later, during a rare Red Star attack, their number seven cynically took out Jade. Some of our girls immediately rallied around, Sian twatted the number seven, and there might have been an all-round ruckus if Sam S and Michelle hadn't intervened to calm our girls down. Sam S got a whack on the head with an injured Red Star girl's crutch for her trouble. Again the number seven only saw yellow, as did Jade who'd given the ref a mouthful after the initial challenge. A few minutes after, the ref came over to where all of us from Havant were standing, and told Trevor that there were a lot of aggressive words being exchanged on the pitch and that if it wasn't calmed down he'd abandon the game. As we were 9-2 up then, nobody wanted that to happen, so Trev called the whole team and all us spectators around and told the girls to just concentrate on playing football and us to not make any more comments. It turned out Lynn, Kerry and Rose had been making some caustic observations about some of the Red Star players, which hadn't gone unheard. The ref had also spoken to Red Star and the last 20 minutes were almost tackle-less!
For the rest of the game Lynn and Co continued to remark on Red Star's savage tackling and the physical appearance of some of their players (it has to be said that 4 or 5 of them looked more suited to Sumo wrestling than football), but dropped their conversation to whispers. At the final whistle, our girls did shake hands with the Red Star players - except the 2 and 7 who avoided the handshakes and walked quickly straight for the tunnel as soon as the whistle blew.
A quick chat with Louise and Kay in the bar, until after just a few minutes Trevor announced that he was going if I wanted a lift to Fareham. Cue me downing my nearly-full pint of IPA in one, to cheers from Becky, Kay and Louise.
