Nov. 27th, 2006 10:45 pmWork today, in the swap with Naomi from the other side. Sally, Naomi's team leader, told me I could sit in my usual row, as she always does when I'm on a swap, but the last couple of Mondays or Tuesdays I've worked, my row has been full and I've had to squeeze in somewhere else. So I decided to sit on the other side today, and Sally directed me to Naomi's booth.
As I made my way there, her neighbour, an older lady called Jane, said to me "You've been put in the Bad Girls' corner, then." I'd been longer than usual enjoying my pre-shift coffee in the canteen, so only arrived at the booth bang on 9.30, but got a very pleasant surprise from Jane : "Don't bother switching on, the system's down." So for the first 10 minutes or so it was chatting time, until Sally came round and "suggested" we use the time to check our Lotus Notes.
I was surrounded by women I didn't personally know, though they seemed to know me; indeed, one of them remarked on the now famous (infamous) photo in The News from medieval night. I passed the time wading through my notes from many months ago and deleting those that were no longer needed (which was most of them) until around 10 am a groan went up - the fault had been fixed so we were onto the phones.
At least there were chocolate mints on the nibbles table to keep us going :)
At 2.23 pm, after a succession of people being out, I decided the lady on screen would be my last call. She, though, was in and willing to do the interview now, so I missed the bus by a couple of minutes. Headed for the library and spent the hour-long wait clearing my e-mail.
Stopped at Fareham post office to send Lady Mélisande her Christmas card. Finally got home just before 5.
At college, I got back the exercises on spreadsheets that I'd done from the textbook. To my chagrin Joan had marked quite a few mistakes, though she'd put 'Good effort' on every page but one. One of the mistakes was a genuine slip by me, but another was caused by doing the work on an old computer which prints graphs differently, and she'd also flagged up my pound signs sitting on the left of the column instead of hugging the number. I went to see her about it; she asked me to wait while she dealt with a couple of the others who were starting their Word Processing exam tonight, then asked her about the pound sign issue. She showed me a different way of putting currency signs on spreadsheets from the one in the textbook. The rest of the class went smoothly enough, and I got a boost when I managed to glance at Joan's record of all our progress (I didn't look at the notes on anyone else) and saw I'd apparently got an A for my WP exam.
The poetry box key has gone missing.
