We had a power cut this morning. For just over an hour I lived in fear, not just of the food in the fridges and freezer going manky but also that I would have to dip into my meagre available funds and go to the pub to watch the football. At 10.40, though, my radio alarm clock and video sprang back to life; my heart sank when the power cut out again almost immediately, but a minute later it was back for good. Phew.

Looking at today's games - South Korea v Togo, France v Switzerland and Brazil v Croatia - who'd ever have imagined South Korea v Togo would be the best of the three? Ah, the wonders of the World Cup.

France might have been awful on the field, but at least, having now tried all the flavours, the French Frogs' Legs & Garlic crisps are my favourite, with the Brazilian Salsa flavour in second...

Ah, but do they taste like chicken (as real frogs' legs _actually_ do). If so, they'd make a lousy flavour of crisp I'd have thought, although probably bearable with the garlic.

I've had frogs' legs and they do indeed taste of chicken. Can't say the crisps taste the same, but whatever their flavour I love 'em :)

Ah, but France v Switzerland had the best commentary! According to Mick McCarthy, there shouldn't have been a single foul awarded in the entire match! Priceless!

hahaha, you've reduced the world cup to the world plate .. i love it!!

Thanks! Thinking about it, the Italian Arrabiatta flavour ones are quite tasty too... :)

so, what's on the menu .. er .. who are you going to watch, today?!?

Spain v Ukraine, Tunisia v Saudi Arabia and Germany v Poland. Sadly I didn't have any paella, chocolate-coated pork fat (that's a delicacy in Ukraine!), couscous or sheep eyes, but I did have a bag of German Sausage crisps - delicious.

you're cracking me up

I actually managed to catch the first half of the Brazil v. Croatia game. It wasn't bad except that both sides looked nervous and not much happened until later on in the half. A shame that Brazil won, but at least it was close. =P

Still haven't tried those crisps yet! I might get a few bags in for tomorrow. It's a shame the England one's vindaloo flavour, a fish 'n' chips one would be brilliant...why has nobody ever tried that?

There was a snack called 'The Daily Fish 'n' Chips' in the late 70s, fish and chip flavour potato snacks shaped like chips and little fish, in a packet designed to look like a newspaper. That's the nearest anyone's come to fish 'n' chip crisps that I know of, but yes, someone ought to make them.

I'd heard Univision has better soccer commentary than your English speaking stations, and as a result a lot of non-Hispanic soccer fans prefer to watch it - it must be true, then! Added you right back. x

All the American sportscasters were talking about how the US team is so great now and so ready and prepared and winny, and they lost their first match.

You need to know that soccer is one of THE sports for kids in the US. For some reason, though, once the kids get past high school, there's so very little incentive to keep at it as a pro sport. Lots of people around the world laugh the US football (soccer) teams off, but among school-age kids, it was the most popular sport. The difference is that all the real money is made in baseball, football (NFL), and basketball, so no one pursues pro-soccer as a career.

By no one, I mean very very few people.

And yet you're a leading world power in women's soccer. Maybe the lack of women's baseball and gridiron keeps more girls in soccer as they get older? And your colleges draw girl footballers from all over the world - a friend of mine is currently at Lander University and was their MVP last season, in her freshman year.
