Just come from a driving lesson. Not too bad this time, though a couple of times on turns when oncoming cars suddenly appeared and sent me into a panic, and I stalled the first time and oversteered and went spinning out of control the second. Apart from that, according to Peter my only problems were steering too soon or too late, whipping my foot off the clutch too quick coming out of junctions, and needing to 'get my two feet working in harmony'. Ho hum.

Yeah, one of the first things my mum told me before I started to learn to drive was that with your right foot over the accelerator and your left over the clutch, your feet should never move in the same direction; i.e. as one goes down the other must come up, rather than revving hard before releasing the clutch which just makes you look silly, or releasing the clutch before hitting the gas which is a recipe for a stall.

Obviously if your right foot is over the brake then it doesn't matter in which direction each moves relative to each other. If your left foot is over the brake though, you'll be labelled as a wannabe rally driver and failed.

A nifty trick for you - ignore what your driving instructor may say, but if you keep your left hand on the gear stick between gear changes, rather than return it to the steering wheel, you'll find that your gear changes are smoother.
