After lunch in the canteen (excellent Cajun chicken), headed for the coffee lounge and logged on to the Hawks web site to see if there was any gossip. What there was was a bombshell.

Ian Baird has quit to become manager of Eastleigh.

Naturally that came as a complete shock, but I received the news with calm. One man has left the club, that's all. We have some quality players and some progressive-minded people in charge of the club - at Havant & Waterlooville FC, life will go on. On a thread on the message board asking who people wanted as the new manager, I posted Alex Pike. He's been a success with Gosport Borough and is a motivator and good entertainment value. (And if Pike went to Hawks that would really radge off Mark, he who was exchanging conspiratorial whispers with Miss K2 that night in July, who's on the board at Borough.)

Nice and busy this evening, plenty of long interviews with big families, and during one towards the end, when the guy said his wife worked in "a place called Cowdenbeath" I replied that being a football fan I'd heard of the place - that led him to engage me in a discussion on Scottish football. He also asked who I supported, and promised to follow the Hawks' fortunes in the papers - when I told him about Ian Baird's walkout he wished us luck when we next play Eastleigh. Top bloke.

Bloody hell, didn't see that one coming! Seems like a funny club to jump ship for, there's some kind of drama or upheaval there every few months. I wouldn't be surprised if money's involved somewhere, it usually is with Eastleigh.

That's the prevailing view on the Hawks fan forum. The fact Baird lives next door, in Chandlers Ford, probably helped sway him too.

I believe there's a certain Portugese by the name of Mourinho looking for a job in English football. Just a thought.

Oh, and this K2 woman isn't worth thinking about - clearly not as Everest is better: you'd only be settling for second-best.
