Back to Westleigh Park this afternoon. Back to the Kopparberg, the bacon rolls and all the usual gang. Saw Angie in the clubhouse, but only got to say hello.
In the club shop Aly asked me to sponsor Simon for the London Marathon. I signed up for a fiver and talked to Simon about the race and his previous marathons for a while.
The bloody scoreboard is still sitting idle. You'd think someone would have sorted it out by now. It makes us look like a joke club.
The two old guys I sit next to asked where I'd been the last few months and said they'd been worried about my absence - I just said I'd been working on Saturdays but that job was over now. The standard of football wasn't classic - for the first quarter of an hour both teams did little but lump the ball up in the air, to the disdain of most of the guys around me. A gaping hole in the Hawk defence allowed Maidenhead to take the lead on 14 minutes; Craig netted a well-taken goal five minutes later then Luke put us in front from the penalty spot soon after, but more sieve-like defending let Maidenhead equalise just before half time.
The Radio Solent summariser, right behind me, kept us updated with the goals from some league games. When Arsenal took the lead against Man City I gave Mike, a City fan, a shout to let him know; his reply was "If you ever get toothache, let me know." At least that was nowhere near as bad as the fates he wished on Ken, who told him about Arsenal's second goal.
On the hour Luke Medley fired home at close range from a goalmouth scramble. 3-2 and for the rest of the game we seemed to be coasting, until five minutes from the end Jay Gasson was judged to have fouled a Maidenhead striker in the box and ex-Hawk Richard Pacquette converted the penalty. We had to settle for a point.
Into the clubhouse to watch the full-times coming in on Sky Sports News. Better news there - Thurrock and Dorchester both lost, and the Shire won 2-0 at Forfar. I told the group of Hawks still gathered just inside the entrance to the ground the good news on my way out; Hayley said that puts us nine points clear of the drop zone. All we want now's a win on Monday night.
