Seventh Heaven

Since Thursday afternoon Luton Town had been announcing that today's match was highly likely to go ahead thanks to a pitch cover borrowed from Glasgow Rugby Club. But when I went grocery shopping in MK first thing this morning, as the gale force winds and the torrential rain lashed me, I thought : they can't possibly play in this.

Coming out of Sainsbury's I missed a bus home by seconds and had to plod on through the wind and rain to the row of shops by the train station and take cover in Costa. After finishing my decaf mocha I rang Luton, and was told the game was on.

Mercifully, the weather was a lot milder this afternoon. Stopped at the Ambala shop on the main road just before going in, to buy a few Indian sweets for half-time.

Before kick-off the bloke next to me was moaning about the state of the pitch, saying it had been ruined since our New Year's Day game with Barnet went ahead despite the pitch being a mudbath. I suppose the pitch was a tad cut up, but before too long none of us home fans were complaining...

There wasn't much to choose between the teams in a scrappy first half, but Luton went in 1-0 up thanks to a 12th minute Andre Gray strike from the rebound after the Hereford keeper parried a Cameron McGeehan effort. Whatever John Still said in his half-time team talk clearly worked, as four minutes after the restart McGeehan headed home a corner to put the Hatters two up and that kicked off a goal bonanza - by the 65th minute it was 5-0. For the rest of the game the ground rang to "The Town are going up" coming from all the home sections. Andre Gray completed a deserved hat-trick in the 82nd minute, 6-0 and we thought that was the cherry on the cake, till in injury time the Hereford keeper punched out a free kick and Alex Lawless pounced to fire into the top corner and send the delirious Hatters into seventh heaven.

Made it back to Leighton just in time for bus home, got back in time for Today at the Games.
