Demelza was still off sick today so there was just Melissa and me in my section, and all through our floor only a handful of people were in. The cleaning lady, though, jumped the gun a little : on seeing me just after 7 this morning she seemed surprised to see anyone at all, and asked me to point out my milk so she knew not to chuck it out. Melissa wasn't too happy when she arrived to find her milk and cream cheese had been disposed of prematurely; I had a nearly full 2 pint bottle so shared my milk with her.
When she arrived I was busy taking down the Christmas decorations. Officially, the reason they can't be left up over the break is health and safety. I think it may have more to do with the fact that in the few days before Christmas we have less work on, so can afford to take time to take the decorations down and put them away, while in the first week back in January we're always busy. Pam had thoughtfully handed me the bodger yesterday afternoon to keep by my desk in readiness for today, saving me from having to climb the stepladder; all I had to do was nudge the ceiling squares up so the safety pins holding up the decorations fell down. One square failed to fall back into place and just lay there crooked, much to Melissa's and my amusement; another nudge with the bodger set it straight. Melissa borrowed the bodger to get the last couple down.
With the official office decorations back in their crate, I then had to un-Sellotape Demelza's fairy lights from her, Simon's and my PCs and put them away in her box. Then it was back to my desk.
When the post arrived my quiz prize was in it - a box of Roses. Kudos to the in-house couriers.
Said goodbye and Merry Christmas to Melissa at 2.45 and left the office for the last time this year. There was a feeling of freedom in bunging my 2010 desk calendar in the bin.
Then over to my cousin's garage to collect my car. Very reasonable bill. Home, via the Co-op to stock up on beer for tonight's Two Ronnies specials.
